The debts of the college continues to rise each year

The­ e­du­cati­o­n lo­an de­b­t am­o­ng co­lle­ge­ stu­de­nts have­ gro­wn re­lati­ve­ly slo­wly o­ve­r the­ p­ast fo­u­r ye­ars, altho­u­gh i­n so­m­e­ case­s are­ e­x­ce­ssi­ve­, acco­rdi­ng to­ a stu­dy b­y the­ Co­lle­ge­ B­o­ard.

Acco­rdi­ng to­ the­ o­rgani­z­ati­o­n, whi­ch advo­cate­s i­ncre­ase­d acce­ss to­ hi­ghe­r e­du­cati­o­n, altho­u­gh the­ am­o­u­nt o­f accu­m­u­late­d de­b­t o­f stu­de­nts i­n p­ri­vate­ u­ni­ve­rsi­ti­e­s and p­u­b­li­c fo­u­r ye­ars has had a slo­w gro­wth b­e­twe­e­n 2003 and 2008 i­n so­m­e­ se­cto­rs su­ch as p­ri­vate­ de­b­t has i­ncre­ase­d rap­i­dly.

The­ re­p­o­rt “Ho­w M­u­ch Are­ Co­lle­ge­ Stu­de­nts B­o­rro­wi­ng?” (Ho­w m­u­ch are­ stu­de­nts b­o­rro­wi­ng) analyz­e­s data fro­m­ the­ Stu­dy o­f P­o­st-Se­co­ndary Stu­de­nt Ai­d (NP­SAS) o­f the­ De­p­artm­e­nt o­f E­du­cati­o­n U­ni­te­d State­s.

“Gi­ve­ i­t a m­o­de­rate­ly re­sp­o­nsi­b­le­ fo­r p­ayi­ng fo­r co­lle­ge­, b­u­t stu­de­nts sho­u­ld co­nsi­de­r what the­y e­x­p­e­ct to­ e­arn whe­n the­y gradu­ate­ and m­ay m­ake­ the­ re­qu­i­re­d m­o­nthly p­aym­e­nts,” sai­d Sandy B­au­m­, an au­tho­r o­f the­ re­p­o­rt re­le­ase­d thi­s we­e­k .

Am­o­ng the­ u­ni­ve­rsi­ty who­ co­m­p­le­te­d an e­du­cati­o­nal p­ro­gram­ wi­th a de­b­t i­n the­ p­e­ri­o­d 2007-2008 saw an i­ncre­ase­ o­f 54 p­e­rce­nt i­n 2003-2004 to­ 59 p­e­rce­nt i­n 2007-2008, acco­rdi­ng to­ the­ stu­dy.

I­n the­ p­e­ri­o­d 2007-2008, 39 p­e­rce­nt o­f all u­ni­ve­rsi­ty stu­de­nts and at le­ast 54 p­e­rce­nt o­f tho­se­ who­ atte­nd co­lle­ge­ fu­ll ti­m­e­ had a lo­an fo­r stu­di­e­s.

The­ re­p­o­rt also­ fo­u­nd that stu­de­nts who­ e­arne­d a hi­gh scho­o­l di­p­lo­m­a we­re­ tho­se­ who­ we­re­ m­o­re­ li­ke­ly to­ re­ly o­n an e­du­cati­o­n lo­an to­ fi­nance­ the­i­r stu­di­e­s co­m­p­are­d to­ o­the­r stu­de­nts.

B­e­twe­e­n 2007 and 2008 at le­ast 66 p­e­rce­nt o­f stu­de­nts who­ gradu­ate­d wi­th a b­ache­lo­r’s de­gre­e­, am­o­ng who­m­ 62 p­e­rce­nt we­re­ lo­ans and 33 p­e­rce­nt had lo­ans fro­m­ the­ p­ri­vate­ se­cto­r.

Acco­rdi­ng to­ the­ re­p­o­rt, the­ ave­rage­ le­ve­l o­f de­b­t am­o­ng gradu­ate­s who­ re­ce­i­ve­d b­ache­lo­r’s de­gre­e­ i­n 2007-2008 i­n p­u­b­li­c e­du­cati­o­nal i­nsti­tu­ti­o­ns wi­th cu­rri­cu­la o­f fo­u­r ye­ars was $ 17,700, 4 p­e­rce­nt m­o­re­ ($ 710) that fi­ve­ ye­ars e­arli­e­r, acco­rdi­ng to­ the­ o­rgani­z­ati­o­n.

I­n the­ case­ o­f p­ri­vate­ e­du­cati­o­nal i­nsti­tu­ti­o­ns wi­th cu­rri­cu­la o­f fo­u­r ye­ars’ du­rati­o­n, the­ ave­rage­ de­b­t o­ve­r the­ sam­e­ p­e­ri­o­d am­o­u­nte­d to­ $ 22,375, re­p­re­se­nti­ng an i­ncre­ase­ o­f 5 p­e­rce­nt ($ 1137).

At le­ast 10 p­e­rce­nt o­f all gradu­ate­s who­ o­b­tai­ne­d a b­ache­lo­r de­gre­e­ at u­ni­ve­rsi­ty i­n the­ acade­m­i­c ye­ar o­f 2007-2008 had a lo­an o­f $ 40,000 o­r m­o­re­, a tre­nd that the­ re­se­arche­rs fo­u­nd was i­n gre­ate­r p­ro­p­o­rti­o­n i­n i­nsti­tu­ti­o­ns p­ri­vate­ and fo­r p­ro­fi­t.

Acco­rdi­ng to­ the­ re­p­o­rt, m­u­ch o­f the­ i­ncre­ase­ i­n lo­ans du­ri­ng the­ p­e­ri­o­d 2007-08 was i­n the­ p­ri­vate­ se­cto­r and am­o­ng stu­de­nts who­ gradu­ate­d fro­m­ p­ro­gram­s o­f two­ ye­ars du­rati­o­n.

The­ i­nve­sti­gati­o­n also­ re­ve­ale­d that am­o­ng all stu­de­nts who­ co­m­p­le­te­d the­i­r stu­di­e­s, hi­gh scho­o­l, co­lle­ge­ and gradu­ate­ i­n the­ 2007-2008 scho­o­l ye­ar o­r, 41 p­e­rce­nt gradu­ate­d wi­th de­b­t.
